Most digital systems comprise some kind of timer circuits for delay generation, time measurement or time-out detection. These units are often designed as digital counters with attached logic. Still, these counters rely on a clock signal for providing a time base. This clock signal and its distribution causes significant energy consumption in ultra-low power systems. Due to the energy constraints, the clock frequency is chosen as low as possible there or the clock signal is even switched off.

In this project, timers based on delay-elements are to be created that allow the clock to be switched off during the wait times. In the phase of a switched-off clock, the time measurement is only based on the delay elements. Since these may vary over process, voltage and temperature, a compensation or in-system-calibration is to implemented.
